okay.

i've dumped LOTS of money into my car. it's streetable to the point of me wanting to rip my head out one morning, then driving it home that evening i'm in love. i've decided to stop modding my car - i'm going to keep it as hero'd as it is now, but not add anything else except for finishing my stereo install. it's a comfortable car, it sounds good, runs strong as hell, and i'm happy.

but i NEED something to tinker with, that's just me. if i didn't have a car, i'd be pouring all of my money into another pet hobby of mine, like computers or robots or something. (i've dumped a lot of money into a lot of hobbies in my short years.)

so, i was thinking. what could be a good way to curb my lust for modding without destroying my car? oh, i know, another one! then i was thinking - maybe i should get an older car. i've always wanted to restore one and, now that i'm on my own, i won't have my dad bitching at me about how i'll be wasting my money, etc etc.

so i was talking to Ameer. and we've got ourselves an idea.

i'd imagine that restoring a car is a LOT more fun when you have someone with you. i love working on my car, but it's always nice to be able to call up one of my friends and ask their help or company - and, seeing as how if you're "restoring" a car that implies a lot of work, i figured i'd need a lot of help and company. i mean, this isn't an 8-hour cam install. so, i figured - why not spend all of that time with my bestest buddy of all time, Ameer?

well, there was a problem. Ameer would LOVE to keep me company, and i'm sure he'd lend a hand if i needed it, but aside from knowing more about cars and their history than anyone i could imagine, he doesn't know too much about how they work. but, putting that aside, if he put an equal amount of effort into MY car, how would we share? i'd want it all to myself.

then it hit me like a ton of bricks, and thus sparked the greatest idea, plan, adventure and car story of ALL TIME. we should BOTH restore cars, together, at the same time - helping each other out, learning on the way, etc etc!! but what cars? they would have to be cheap - in reasonably restorable condition, but still needing a healthy amount of work - but still affordable for the two of us. plus, we have to like them, and it'd be cool if our best-buddy restoration projects matched. we chose matching f-bodies.

i will restore a 1979 Pontiac Trans-Am, and i am aiming to paint it silver with red and black accents and i want to kit the interior up in silver and black trim - a 10th anniversary clone. i plan for it to be powered by a (hopefully restored original) 400 with a 4-speed.

Ameer will be restoring a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, and he plans to paint it blue (he even says Arrival Blue Metallic, the color of his car now) with white stripes, seen here in place of the red. he also wants a 4-speed, (maybe more gears?), and his will most likely be powered by (again, hopefully a restored original) Chevy 350.

anyway, i imagine this project will carry us on through 'till graduation, but we're both serious and we will go through with it, or end up killing ourselves in frustration. now begins the long hunt for the cars, we'll keep you guys posted on all of the progress, of course.

He's not kidding. He's sent me really shabby photoshops of it. Colour schemes, poorly cut and pasted "this is how my car will look in front of a building" images and so on. Oh and one crudely drawn image in crayon of a stick man standing in front of a blob on wheels with arrows pointing to both that say "ME AND MI CARR".

Anyhow, yes, nice idea guys, don't forget video of any kind of super moment, like starting 'em up for the first time and so on.

yeah, we live about a day's drive away from each other. due to really redneck abandoned and pretty rust-free availability of these cars in Oklahoma, that's more than likely where they'll (at least mine) will come from, and they'll probably be up there until they're finished.

Ameer will come up as often as he can, but i will work on my car all the time. hopefully i can tackle all the major hurdles on my car, so that when Ameer comes up we can get to his hurdles relatively simply. but, this won't get done for a few years i'd imagine, so, yeah.

I changed my mind about painting it GM's Arrival Blue Metallic.

It must be black.

It MUST be BLACK.

It will also have the Z28 decal scheme above. Maybe red stripes, maybe blue stripes, maybe gray stripes, I haven't decided. But it must be black.

As soon as I get a few thousand saved up, I'm going to by a shell. It doesn't even have to have an engine. Holes in the floor? No problem.

But I CANNOT wait for that feeling of physically having the car. Taking the plunge. KNOWING that I have the car.

I'm so pumped.

See, I figure, if I had the money, I could go out and buy a PRISTINE second generation Camaro for $7,000. It would be AMAZING for a month, then it would break, and then what? I would take it to a shop and pay them money to fix it, because I don't know anything about cars.

But if I start at the bottom and build it up myself, I'll learn along the way, and by the time I'm done, I'll know the car intimately and I'll be able to work on it myself like a MAN.

Maybe you guys should start something on a smaller scale then diving deep in?  Building a car from scratch especially a classic can and will take years.

My mate’s dad has a 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 that took him about 10 years to restore to show car condition.

And then the friend of my Dad’s that has restored Three Ford Mercuries and a Ford Coupe taking at least 5 years each (plus a butt load of money)

i honestly think we'll be able to do this - we're finding cars that are just a few grand with little to no rust, and, if there is any, it's all surface rust that we can build back up with body filler.

the engines i'm not worried about, interior i'm not worried about - just the body panels and frame being rusted through.

and i fully expect this to take a couple of years.

It would be cool, but I'm trying to save money for traveling.

Besides, I don't really have a fixed address as such, and thus no garage.  biggrin

WORD. You have already lived my dream with your Skyline GT-R.

It's weird how I'm so pumped for something that can't conceivably happen for a couple years.

I have, jeez, only a few hundred left in the bank since my kickass internship which was little over a year ago. I spent it all on clothes and dates. And having steak as often as possible. I couldn't believe I spent all of it. =(

Oh well, lesson learned. This year I am definitely living thrifty and saving every dime for car. Unlike my money last year, this time I have a goal.

I'm going to get a job on campus in the mornings, and maybe a job as a waiter in the evenings every other night, and studying every other night. Surely, getting a job can only keep me productive and on a schedule, therefore helping me in school.

Need money money money for Camaro. It would be SO AWESOME if I could afford it by this summer. Also definitely need another internship this summer. Will start applying super early.

yeah, holding a salary has it's benefits - but not having as much time to actually do this is not one of them.

we are both paying for everything on our cars, just to live out our dreams.

(plus our parents thing we're dumb)
