Hello again. I have been practicing with the tutorials on how to make cars for the 2D games and ran into a small problem. I have been leaning towards making hot rod type cars and in trying to find my own style, as it were, of shading and making cars. The problem I'm curious about is not knowing which of the pictures on a template take precedence over the others? I don't want the wheels showing on side damage if the corner damage takes precedence over that particular picture and so on. Does anybody know which order of precedence the template pictures are listed?
I hope this makes sense?

If I understand your question, I think you're making GTA seem a lot smarter than it is.

It's just a straight replacement on the delta sheet. The engine works out which point of impact was struck (left, right, top left corner, etc). As far as I know it then just overlays the changes in the relevant delta sheet bitmap onto the current car bitmap.

So when you ding the front corner, it compares the front corner damage bitmap with the undamaged one, and applies the differences to your current car. This way the damage builds up as you knacker your car.

It won't show what's underneath on the undamaged car though, because the act of colouring something the same as the background colour on a damage bitmap (to say remove the entire front quadrant on impact) makes the damaged bitmap different, so the changes are applied.

I wouldn't stress too much about the deltas, since the car is pretty small, fairly blurry when it's run through the engine, and moving. All of which makes too much detail irrelevant. Have a shufties at the deltas of some of the higher scoring cars in the database to see some good examples.

I've downloaded many of the cars from GTAzz to use as examples when practicing. I've been working a weird routine the past couple of weeks. Practice, look at cars, practice some more, look at cars, "Oh that's how it should be!", practice some more, get frustrated, take a break, look at some cars, practice some more, etc , etc. Not as easy as I'd hoped it would be. LOL. I don't want to release anything for your site until I've gotten fairly decent with this. Some of my cars have hot rod wheels that stick out some and I was just wondering about the delta format so when a part should show something of a flat tire, I don't want it suddenly pumped back up again on another damage picture. That would just be weird.
Many thanks for the quick responses and help. :)

Ah right, getcha. No that wouldn't happen. You damage the front left and puncture a tyre, then any damage on the rest of the car would be added, to the existing, damaged car.

And I wouldn't worry too much about releasing cars on my site, we're all on borrowed time I'm afraid since the plug is about to be pulled.

You're pulling the plug?? Aw man, that totally blows. This site has been around so long I always hoped it would last forever. I always came back here to look around hoping for news and new stuff. This is the main cornerstone of the GTA world man, why are you closing up shop?  sad

We're losing our hosting, and to be honest I've not done anything with the actual site for years. I thought I might upload a wiki somewhere with the content in, just for anyone who wants to use them as a reference. With luck the forums will keep going. There's a thread in the off topic forum somewhere with more details.

make sure you store the website properly archived for the future generations, gouranga and gtazz are modding museums.
