Hello all,

I've recently gotten GTA1 from the Rockstar site (I love this game) and wanted to import some of the awesome cars I downloaded from GTAzz. Unfortunately each time I try to import a car using GTACars, the game will no longer run. It keeps giving me an error and needing to close.
Is there an alternate way to "safely" import cars into GTA1?

What error do you get? GTACars is pretty much the defacto standard for importing cars. I've not tried the rockstar classics version so I'm not sure if they changed anything, but I'd be surprised.

The instruction at "0x2000d980" referenced memory at "0x00fc7298". The memory could not be "read".

The referenced memory number (the second number) changes sometimes but that's the error shown when the program closes out.

EDIT: I should also point out that I'm using the shareware version GTACars310s. It was my understanding that I could still use it to replace the cars even though I can't change anything about them. Is this correct?

It's going back a bit, but I think the shareware version of GTACars can do everything except the advanced stuff like moving the position of the doors. Fairly certain you can edit stats and deltas and so on.

Error rings a bell but I can't place it. I'll set the game downloading from rockstar now and have a whirl later, see if I can replicate your problem. Otherwise we'll have to see if anyone else can help.

I'm  wondering if it has anything to do with compatibility? I'm running Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 but the graphics card is an older version Geforce 5700 FX. I notice the game has the same error again after playing it last night. I had reinstalled it and didn't add any cars and got the same error again. So obviously it's not happening with just GTACars.

EDIT: Yep, just tried it again and got the same error type. Had not replaced any cars when that happened. The only thing I changed was the resolution by using the F11 key. I changed the resolution to 1024x768 at 32bit. Can't recall if I changed it when I first got this error. Any of this ring more bells?

Yer that's right. I only ever used the shareware one.

If you want to do the advanced stuff, I think delfi's program allows it but i've never really used it.

okey doke that makes a bit more sense, since a google for similar errors just returns graphics driver problems. Trouble is I've found for older games like this, it's not necessarily just "update to the latest drivers". Some games only work with very specific versions, helpfully.

Erm, not sure what to suggest. Is the new version of GTA windows only? I know in the original you could run it under dos, so something like dosbox might help. Not sure if the rockstar classics version only came with the win32 runtimes though.

I'll have a play and see if I can turn anything up.

The free version of GTA1 has some strange bug that corrupts PLAYER_A.DAT after the first run on some systems (I don't get this problem on any of my systems).  One work around is to do a clean install of GTA1, make a backup of PLAYER_A.DAT before you run GTA1 and then restore the original PLAYER_A.DAT after every run.

I found this on gtaforums.com gtamp.com/GTA1/GTAFixer.rar

Extract it to your GTA1 folder and run it before every game.  I think it changes a single byte in the PLAYER_A.dat file and renames the music to the correct filenames.

The GTAFixer did not work but replacing the PLAYER_A.DAT file seems to work perfectly. I even tried it after replacing some cars and have not encountered a problem as yet. Many thanks for the help everyone! :) I do have a question about this file. Is this the player save file? If so will it start me out from the beginning each time I play the game or is the progress saved elsewhere, hopefully?
