Here is the thing. I can't play GTA 1 on my new laptop. It launches fine, I press play and select the city, but when the game starts the colors on the screen are all messed up (you can't see anything). Here is screenshot:![]() I tried changing the resolution with F11 but it didn't work. It just changes the screen to: ![]() I've also tried to run the game under compatibility mode for Windows 95/98..., but it gives two errors: Unable to link to KERNEL32.DLL Cannot load WDIRxxF.DLL I believe the reason is 15.4" display on my laptop and the game can't fit into the wide screen. So does anyone know how to solve the problem?

It's not original version. I download it from a website with abandonware games (not Rockstar.com) for free.

Sounds like a crap answer, but I seem to remember some talk of XP optimisation in the version they released for free through rockstar classics. Might be worth a shot. Also have you tried DOSbox or one of the other dos emulators? At the end of they day trying to run 10 year old software is always going to be tricky. ------------------ azz.gouranga.com est. 1998 (I am oldskoolier than joo)

Even got my hands on a Windows Vista and guess what... IT WORKED! .... untill the next time I booted the VM now I'm getting constant (when I click play) "Grand Theft Auto has stopped working" - about the least possible error Vista can give (once again!) Tried to google it but it just means somethings wrong/or misconfigured/missing and Vista doesn't want to try to boot it up... GG OH btw I have done the gtarepair.exe and the player_a.dat rewriters and reinstalling the game etc... in all possible directions so no need to try an advice there edit: ironic, I just installed the latest Nvidia driver (NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M) and now it got worse: [img=http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/4936/gta2uz4.th.jpg] in case you can't go with the dutch, its the typical "instruction on blabla (written) failed" |

DOSBox can only run executables designed for DOS. The rockstargames.com/classics GTA1 has the DOS files removed for your inconvience. The GTA1 Windows executables are bound to have problems with the latest video cards and drivers since they aren't designed with GTA1 in mind. You are going to need a virtual machine or old PC or the DOS files from the CD version of GTA1. ------------------ Stealing cars is the easy part

GTA 1 on laptops with Nvidia graphic cards: STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL! INTRO GTA 1 usually doesn't work on the laptops with Nvidia graphic cards (series 8). The game starts normally but when the city loads the screen looks all messed up. Fortunately THERE IS A SOLUTION for this problem! You need to run the game in a virtual machine to make it work. Because it's not so simple and could take you some time to make it work I decided to write a STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL. So, here we go ... SET-UP (do it just the first time, it takes up to 2 hours) - burn GTA 1 on a CD and eject it - download and install Microsoft Virtual PC - lunch Microsoft Virtual PC and create New Virtual Machine: *specify the amount of ram by yourself! (do not leave custom settings) - insert Windows XP with unique or cracked serial number - start Virtual Machine you have just made - click CD > Use Physical Drive E: - click Action > Reset - install Windows XP - eject CD with Windows - click Action > Install Virtual Machine Additions and follow the instructions - insert CD with GTA 1 and install (or copy) it on harddisc - make a shortcut of the game on the desktop of the Virtual Machine - close your Virtual Machine and select Turn off - select your Virtual Machine and click Settings - click Display and check boxes: Hide vm menu bar, hide vm status bar and select Use only standard resolution - close Virtual PC Console - copy a shortcut of Microsoft Virtual PC on the Desktop (from the Start menu>Programs) START THE GAME (do it every time you want to start the game, it takes up to 2 minutes) - right-click on your Taskbar, check Lock Taskbar and remove taskbar from the display (so there will be more space for your GTA screen) - lunch Microsoft Virtual PC from Desktop, select your Virtual Machine and click start (and wait until Windows loads) - lunch GTA shortcut, enter the cheats and enjoy * enlarge Virtual Machine screen when the city loads (if you got standard 4:3 screen, you can even try it full-screen) * to exit the game just close the Virtual machine window and select Save state FINAL THOUGHTS Firstly, if anyone knows a better and faster way to make GTA1 work on laptops with Nvidia graphic cards, please let us know! Post it in some GTA1 forum and GTA community will be very thankful! This solution is just provisional, so it will be nice to know a better way to solve the basic problem. I heve been searching for a solution for a long time. I finally got it work thanks to Delfi, who adviced me to try Virtual Machine (hvala, jernej!). In my opinion is GTA1 one of the best games ever released so I decided to write the tutorial to help others with the same problem. And there's another thing: if you run GTA1 in a VM, you can save the last state of the game. An interesting thing, though.

I got the DOS version working in VirtualBox but it's too slow in 640x480 and it looks horrible in 320x240. VirtualBox is supposed to have better performance than Virtual PC but maybe not for DOS games. I'll have to install Windows on it sometime. ------------------ Stealing cars is the easy part
