| Ok, so I pretty much disappeared for a while and now im back. At least for the next following days. Guess GTa4 woke me up. Anyhoo I decided to get out the old GTA stuff. Ok so I was lazy to find my discs, plus I run XP, and I'm lazy, so I just went over to Rockstar classics to get GTA and GTA2. Also installed GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas, presto. (the free version of GTA1 seems to have a mistake though, the music files aren't named properly so a little fix was needed there). Note this is highly subjective... GTA Needless to say, unlike in the past when I was really excited about the game's freedom, now it took me no more than 15 minutes until I stopped because I got bored. Wether it's a good game or not I can't discuss right now. Everything feels clunky. And other than driving around a pretty undetailed and overall repetitive city without much to do, or doing missions there really wasn't anything you could do. Pedestrians were scarse, police cars were all the same. And if you didn't do anything, nothing would happen either other than an occasional road accident. There were cranes, ambulances and firefighters though, but yanking someone out of their car or shooting a pedestrian right in front of a police cruiser and they'd do nothing. Up until the point that you've exceeded an to-the-player-invisible quota, then you received a cop head, no matter how isolated the area is where you committed the crime. Clunky, but fun to play with some mates, but a bit flat to keep up the interest nowadays. GTA: London 1969 Groovy, amusing, but about the same as GTA except it takes place in London. Thumbs up for it being the only GTA who takes place outside the US AND in a real city. (well, the other's were based on real cities, and there really isn't much in a name, so really who cares about speculating about wether or not Liberty City is a 'real' city aswell). GTA: London Expansion Haven't played it, presto, let's move on. GTa2 This one I'm a bit puzzled about. People seemed to like this one less than the original GTA. Can also be seen by the ammount of custom cars that were made for GTA compared to GTa2. It's true, GTA2's pallette system was a bit of an annoyance when making custom cars but now I'm viewing the game from a player's point of view and not a modder's. GTA2 was a great improvement to GTA1. It was powered by a brand new engine, which made the entire feel of the game much smoother and less clunky. It had nifty dusk effects, working headlights and break lights (which flashed when the car's alarm went off), gangs, muggers, carjackers and cops patrolling on foot. And they all went about their own business. Gangs getting angry at muggers and shooting, cops getting angry at gangs,... when you jacked a car, the driver had different reactions from running, to shooting at you to run after their car to yank you back out. Gangs reacted towards you appropiatly according to the respect-o-meter which showed you how much each gang (dis)liked you. Tons more weapons, amazing explosions, picking up people with cabs, humorous missions, FBI, SWAT and army, and the cop cars could even do proper car chases (better than the 3D GTA's even). GTA2's cities were far more alive than the GTA1 cities. The future setting was a bit bizarre, but I liked it, though some others may not. Anyway, GTA2 was much more playable than GTA1 was. Btw, anyone notice as how further you moved into the game, the smaller and the crappier your hideout (the church) became? GTA3 This was one of the games I anticipated the most, GTA went fully 3D. From when it was rumored to exist I had very high expectations, and when it was released, the game lived up to my expectations (having high expectations can usually lead to disappointment). The 3 areas, which were each seemingly smaller than the areas from the previous GTA's were far less repetitive and were well used, it was easier to make out where you were and what was going on. About every area in GTA3 had something interesting to visit. The missions were far more serious though, but this may of have been necessary to attract a wider audience. Being able to roll over cars, cutscenes, day/night, vigilantes and it being fully 3D were about the most major additions to GTA2. So features-wise there weren't as many additions as from GTA1 to GTA2 I don't think, but the ones they did make (especially the 3D thing) was HUGE, so no problems there. GTA: Vice City Since GTA3 blew me away (and none of the GTA's had disappointed me really, GTA1 amazed me the first time I saw it, I had to have it. GTA2 had a much higher playability factor so it got me hooked aswell) I had again, enormous expectations for Vice City. I was expecting a whole new game, but to my disappointment, it was pretty much GTA3 with a new coat, like London was for GTA1. The Miami 80's setting was interesting, bikes were fun, but it didn't have me impressed for long. GTA: San Andreas I let San Andreas get past me without much attention, thinking it would be just like Vice City. I had very low expectations for this one. But when I finally got to play it at a friend's I was surprised (both bad and good). Ok, so the game itself was brilliant. The streets were filled with way many more mundane and 'standard' looking cars, the cars were faster, the cities were huge, the targetting system was revamped and this time, Rockstar got it right. The highways are botched though, even in GTA3 and GTA2 cars could change lanes properly. Trucks drive almost as fast as me in my infernus at full speed. Pile-ups EVERYWHERE. I don't know who programmed the highways, but just the traffic ruins the fun in them, it's impossible to drive on them without slamming into a sudden pile-up in front of you or rear-ending a car that suddenly halts to a full stop in 1 second. Eating and working out, the dates and the dancing were gay ass hell. Why on earth would anyone in their right mind want to enter a gym and be repeatedly tapping the same key watching your character workout until the game tells you you've worked out enough for the day. Down at the dark pits of hell, many people whined: "yo my wishlist is that u can eet and dance and watch tv and play the atari INSIDE the game!!" Well guess what, now you do get to play videogames and arcades, take your girl to dinner buying her flowers and workout in Grand Theft Auto. Don't forget to stop at Victim or Zip and do some clothes shopping, wearing green clothes gives you respect among your gang. That is just fricking gay. GTA IV I don't know what to expect of this one. The graphics are looking good, the cars look good. I just hope that firstly they release it on the PC (and not half a year later), and secondly, that they removed all the Sims shit from San Andreas. EDIT: I didn't cover Liberty Stories and Vice City Stories. Simple. I don't own a PSP or a PS2 and they are just revamps with new carjacking animations and helicopters in the GTA3 and Vice City cities with new missions so I'm not very fond of them either. /rant ------------------ Be Sexy Be True Be Wild Be You  (the old Gunman) |
